Green Roofs
A green roof, also known as a vegetative roof or eco-roof, is a layer of vegetation planted over a waterproofing system installed on top of a flat or sloped roof. The plants chosen are drought resistant and have shallow roots, such as sedums and other succulents.
Green roofs offer many benefits. Most importantly, they reduce and slow stormwater runoff. Green roofs also:
• reduce heating /cooling requirements
• alleviate the effects of an urban ‘heat island’
• have a longer roof lifespan
• improve sound insulation
• capture gaseous and particulate pollutants
• increase biodiversity
• provide carbon sequestration
Many of these benefits also apply to green walls.
