Native Plants
Much of this arboretum is planted with native plants. A native plant is one that has grown here prior to colonial settlement.
There are a number of reasons to prefer plants that are native.
1. They co-evolved with local fauna, especially insects, and have often developed a co-dependence.
2. They are better adapted to the local climate and geology.
3. They have a cultural history that goes back prior to colonial settlement.
4. Their beauty competes favorably, although may not exceed, that of non-natives.
5. Contrary to opinion, they do not necessarily need less water or maintenance.
6. They create a ‘sense of place’ that is unique to our area.
A shortcoming of native plants is that there are not many native evergreens available. As a result, in the winter we may have to depend more on bark structure, berries, and overall structure.
