Wesern Run

The Western Run stream draws from a watershed of about 1100 acres, extending mainly west and north, originating in Pikesville and ultimately joining the Jones Falls at Falls Rd. and Kelly Ave. It mainly serves as a storm drain for the area and its impervious surfaces. Although it carries with it nutrients (phosphates and nitrogen) and sediments, the main pollutants of the Chesapeake Bay, the Western Run has the highest biological health score in the greater Jones Falls watershed (58 sq. mi.).

In an average year of 42” of rain, the watershed receives 11 billion gallons, most of it running off into the Western Run. In a hurricane event, the runoff could be a billion gallons.

We can help the watershed and the Chesapeake Bay by avoiding runoff from our property (creating permeable surfaces, rain barrels, berms, and rain gardens), minimizing fertilizers and pesticide usage, and clearing streets and storm drains of leaves and debris.
